New to Raw 9 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
Hello,

My name is Manda & I'm very new to raw. I've read books by Carol Alt, Natalia Rose, Karen Knowler & have read Angela's website quite a bit. Such an inspiring story!

I have asthma & gained 63 lbs. with my pregnancy in 2005. I've only lost 22 lbs. of that & I feel lethargic all of the time. I know I need a major change. Staying at home with kids & going to college full time is really beating me down.

I miss being thin & hate having no energy. I want to be healthy & vibrant again. This is my last hope.

I do have some concerns:
1.) Can I go raw without drinking greens? I just can't bring myself to do it. I tried it the other day & it looks like something from "The Exorcist." Just can't do it.

2.) I have 2 small kids & a husband who refuses to go raw. How do I stay motivated?

I'd like to eat fruit & drink water before noon; eat raw veggies by themselves until 7 p.m. & then nothing but water after 7. Is that a good schedule?

Is there a limit as to how much fruit/veggies I can eat in regards to weight loss?

Boy--sounds like the Grand Inquisition, eh? Too many questions!

Thanks so much & have a fantastic weekend!

Manda

Hi Manda,

I probably don't have the answer to all of your questions, but I thought I would contribute what I know.

Have you considered green smoothies instead of green juices? If you throw in some berries (frozen if you want) and a couple of bananas, it not only will not be green anymore but taste like fruit. Just be sure to chew your smoothies to get the salivary digestive enzymes started. Then maybe eventually you will be interested in green juices.

I have 2 teenagers and a husband who are not interested in going raw either. My daughter has tried but couldn't stick with it. I do fix them a bowl of fruit at most breakfasts that they eat before the rest of their breakfast and a salad at most suppers. Other than that, I just try to make sure the rest of the food in the house is at least free of additives, transfats, etc. so I do a lot of shopping at Whole Foods & Trader Joe's.

I stay motivated with raw food forums such as this one. I used to be on a different one, but they promoted the 80/10/10 approach which doesn't really work for me. I am also blogging. I read e-newsletters from a lot of raw foodists, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and read books. Lastly, the thing that keeps me motivated is keeping the cravings at bay with home colonics. Really helps!

Some raw foodists, including myself, do not eat breakfast. But, if you are hungry at breakfast time then fruit or a fruit smoothie is a great idea. If you are not hungry somedays in the morning, wait until you are which may be lunchtime. This gives your body more time to cleanse & detox & gives your digestive system a rest.

That sounds like a good schedule if it keeps you full and satisfied. It may be too perfect to always stick to though and that could cause you to get upset with yourself and give up and binge on cooked foods (the reason I say that, is that I've been there, done that).

You might need some denser raw foods to fill you up at first. Like avocados & some nuts. I also like an occasional raw flax cracker from www.therawfoodworld.com with a little raw nut butter on it.

I don't think there is a limit to how much you can eat of the raw fruit and veggies in regards to weight loss, but I would suggest reading Angela's book "How to go Raw for Weight Loss." The one thing I would caution is to not graze all day. Try to eat a good meal and wait a couple of hours before having a snack or another meal. Your digestive system needs a chance to catch up.

Lastly, have you considered going high raw? Angela Stokes story at http://www.rawreform.com/content/view/17/41/ tells how she ate 70% raw for 3 years (and gained health & lost weight) before she went 100% raw. Just try to avoid the refined starches & sugars (the two worst foods). This way you won't feel like a failure if you eat some cooked food and your body can slowly transition.

_base_d on Matt Monarch's book "Raw Success" and Norman Walker, I believe that if one is not able to do colonics to eliminate the toxins that your body is trying to dump on the raw food diet then a high raw diet is a better option to slow down the detox.

Good luck and you can do it. You can regain your health and energy and lose that weight!

Hi Karen,

Thanks! This definitely helps. I also bookmarked your blog.

I started one, it is: http://vegjourney.blogspot.com

I went to the market today & loaded up on organic veggies & fruits, raw nuts & some beautiful avocados. I'm going to make guacamole and put it in lettuce leaves to eat like a taco. Yum...

I posted my "Cooked" photo on my blog & will take a new photo every 30 days to check my progress. So, the next photo will be on New Year's.

Changing over to the raw life_style_ is a good way to begin 2008, isn't it?

Christmas is going to be difficult b/c my in-laws, who are from New Orleans, are making their usual stuff--jambalaya, pecan pie, etc. I am bringing a veggie tray to munch on. That is going to be a BIG test for me.

When you started, how did you cope around the holidays?

Thanks for your e-mail & be well!

I love your blog and have bookmarked it also!

That sounds yummy, your raw tacos. What did you put in your guacamole beside avocado?

I need to post photos too, good idea.

Yes, great way to start the new year!

For the holidays, I just usually prepared both raw and cooked foods and then I just ate the raw foods. The raw food used to just be green & fruit salads, but this past Thanksgiving I experimented and made myself raw potatoes & gravy and raw pasta & sauce. I liked the raw zucchini pasta & sauce best. The www.rawfoodrightnow.com website has been providing great ideas on how to handle the holidays. Check them out!

Take care!

Hi,
I'm new to this site and to raw, with a non raw family and just want to add a recipe with greens I have also put on another topic, its heaven.
cup of frozen pineapple chunks
cup of freshly squeezed orange juice,
a hunk of greens, I like spinach as it makes the smoothie go a wonderful lime green. Blend in high speed blender until lovely and smooth. It is really lovely, let me know what you think.
Happy Holidays
