PLEASE COMPOST

I recently heard Howard Lyman ? aka ?The Mad Cowboy? ? speak at the
Green Fest gathering in Chicago. Lyman is well-known as the cattle
rancher who went from full-on, full-scale, commercial cattle ranching
to vegan spokesperson. Wow. Great journey and a wonderful speaker. The
thing that really spoke to me in Lyman?s talk that day however was
about topsoil?now I have mentioned this before, on the RawReform blog
and I will surely continue to do so, as this is a matter dear to my
heart?and it can really be summarised in two words: PLEASE COMPOST. :)
In his talk, Lyman mentioned that in the last couple of hundred years
in the US, around 75% of the topsoil has been depleted?75%...
I find this very disturbing. Why? Well, great soil helps us to grow
great food. Mineral-rich, healthy, balanced, organic, loved soil is
going to help us produce much happier food than a source that is
overworked, washed out and depleted. 75% of that useful material is
GONE from this land. You may be eating an abundance of fresh raw foods
daily therefore and depending on where that produce has been grown,
receiving very little actual nutrient value from it, compared to what
is possible. So, what can we do to bring ourselves to a happier space
with the topsoil? Well, the most obvious answer to me is: COMPOST?
I have been passionate about composting for years ? ever since spending
a winter helping out at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales.
I explored a great deal about this issue then, as well as helping
restore a whole display area on different composting methods.
I tend to keep my energy away from most ?causes? at this stage in my
life ? i.e. campaigning/protests and so on?I feel I can have a much
more effective impact on this reality by keeping my energy focused on
those things that truly speak to me?and this does, so here I am,
turning up at the page and writing about it?food, nourishment, quality
nutrition ? this is a foundation of health for all of us. Composting is
a way for us to give back to the earth, in appreciation and support,
rather than sending that useful material to landfill with the rest of
the ?trash?. We often speak in our societies of ?throwing things
away??hmmmm?have you ever considered where ?away is? We all share this
planet. How about considering anyone else?s ?backyard? as your own?
While we?re at it, how about nurturing that back yard by giving back to
it whatever we can in the way of compostable matter?
Now, there is an idea that runs along the lines that a bit of
decomposing material in a landfill site is actually a great help in the
break-down process. I can understand that. HOWEVER, it also seems like
an easy way to bypass taking responsibility for doing what we CAN in
our own little area to nurture the soil back to vitality. There are
MORE than enough people adding their compostable waste to landfill ?
that?s really not the issue here ? what would be wonderful is if more
people were to retain those scraps and FEED the land with it, rather
than throwing it into the mix of landfill.
Of course, the earth also produces immense abundance year-round, all of
which we do not use ? a lot is returned directly to the soil, without
us ever even intervening?that?s great?that doesn?t tend to occur
however in the areas where we humans are most prevalent and work the
soil the hardest to produce for us. Mono-crops, intense farming methods
(esp linked to the meat/dairy industry) and deforestation all strip
down and deplete the soil ever-further.
So?what to do??
Well, thankfully, composting is a solution you can start right now,
today, in your own home?start by getting a container of some sort in
your kitchen to hold your food scraps. ALL food scraps are welcomed by
the way, whether cooked or raw, vegan or animal-based?the earth makes
no judgement ? there?s something useful in all of it?feel free to add
in tea bags, coffee grinds, flowers or other plants that would like to
leave, nail clippings, hair and so on ? essentially, anything that is
?of the earth?. Also feel free to add in paper or cardboard torn down
into pieces ? this will help break up the mixture and also keep it from
getting very wet. (N.B. these guidelines are general ? if you live in
an area where compost is collected, specific rules may be in place
concerning what they will take. Also, if you plan to give your compost
to a wormery, please be more particular with your offerings too ?
nothing harsh like hot peppers, preferably little citrus, vegan and
leave out the paper/cardboard.)
If you have your own garden space, you can start your own compost heap
right there. You might want to buy a special box/turner for it (like this one,
designed by raw foodie John Roulac), or just make a simple closed off
area to contain it ? perhaps using wire to surround it, or stacked old
car tyres or a wooden frame. Within 6 months to a year, once it has
fully broken down, you will have rich, fertile soil to feed your garden
beds, grow herbs or veggies in window boxes or planters or give away to
friends. The more we can strengthen and re-enrich the soil in all
areas, the better?the more we keep on giving back to the earth, the
more she can keep giving freely, easily and abundantly to us.
To me, composting is all part of the bigger picture. There are many
possible solutions to help us restore topsoil and work more in unison
with the Earth. What I love about composting is that it is so simple
and instantly accessible for everyone ? it is a solution we can ALL
start to implement immediately if we choose to.
I certainly find it wonderful that more and more people seem to be
interested all the time in eating more raw foods, yet giving BACK more
to the soil, as well as taking more from the earth, seems key for our
long-term success on this path. It seems like a real disconnection is
going on for me to see someone eating raw and then not composting the
remains. Consider the amount of nutrients that person could return to
the soil on a daily basis if they were to compost, especially if they
use mainly organic produce. Then consider the amount of compost CITIES
could be collectively returning out to the land if people chose
to?imagine how much compost one single restaurant or juice bar could
produce in the space of just a week?Populations are most dense in
cities. That?s clear. Most produce is not grown in cities. It is
brought in. It is easy to feel disconnected from the source of that
food when it is so far away and to assume it will just?keep on coming?
Well, if we all keep on doing our little bit that we can and giving
back to the earth directly, the more likely it is that a healthy,
vibrant food supply WILL keep flowing for us all, so?once again?simply,
clearly and in conclusion...PLEASE COMPOST ;)
